Preparation for University Entrance Examinations

The students have been asked to translate some text written in Japanese in preparation for the entrance exams into university. How do you begin to correct English like this?

'I feel I dont even know something I like. If I go to a society and posh for work, I become parts of something moving society without notice and lose my own. If I lose myself, living is useless.' (anon student)

I'm certainly not knocking this student. He/she did the best they could given the difficulty of the task. It frustrates me immensely when students cant hold a simple conversation in English and yet are expected to think and express opinions at this level.

I've been asked to help translating that same text. The students were able to do it well enough, actually. You're right though, these same students have a hard time getting through a self-introduction! But...that's why we're here, right (in theory), to help improve the students's oral/aural capabilities? がんばろう!
